What Life Was Like For Women in the Roman Empire

May 26, 2026 by Regina Clarke

#18: Widowhood

Though often accompanied by grief, Widowhood could be a gateway to newfound freedom for Roman women. Picture a wealthy widow overseeing her estate, her staff awaiting her orders as she finally steps into a role of independence.

Widows could own property, support their children, and influence local politics without a husband’s control. However, for poorer women, widowhood often meant hardship as they struggled to make ends meet. Society expected them to remarry quickly, but many resisted, choosing self-reliance over another marriage.
