If you were accused of a crime in Athens, you didn’t hire a lawyer to speak for you. You were expected to stand up and argue your own case before that enormous jury. Public speaking wasn’t optional — it was survival.

Some people paid speechwriters to help craft arguments, but you still had to deliver it yourself. Charisma, confidence, and emotional appeal could sway hundreds of voters. In many cases, performance mattered just as much as the facts.
