#3: Mixed-Race Upbringing Shaped His Worldview
Derek grew up in a biracial household in the 1970s and 80s, which wasn’t always easy. His parents, Charles and Dorothy, taught him to treat people with respect and to work hard no matter what. Those lessons gave him the strength to handle challenges on and off the field.

As one of the few mixed-race kids in his community, Derek sometimes faced bias and negativity. Instead of letting it bring him down, he learned to rise above it. That mindset became part of who he was and shaped the way he carried himself during his Yankees career.
